Passengers Enjoy Smooth Journey at Terminal 2 as Departures Facilities Commence Operations

Passengers Enjoy Smooth Journey at Terminal 2 as Departures Facilities Commence Operations
2026/05/27

(Hong Kong, 27 May 2026, 1800hrs) – The new Terminal 2’s (T2) passenger departures facilities commenced operations today, marking a milestone in the development of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).
Hong Kong Airlines is the first airline to relocate its check-in counters from Terminal 1 (T1) to T2. The departure process in T2 has been running smoothly on its first day of operation, with 36 flights scheduled to depart starting from around 0800hrs. Relocation of the other 14 airlines’ check-in services will continue in batches until 10 June.
T2 is served by a full suite of public transport options: Airport Express, airport buses and taxis. Car Park 3, providing over 1 000 spaces, is seamlessly connected to T2.
A wide range of retail shops and a food court have also opened at T2, offering diverse dining and shopping options. Four dining outlets in the food court and a convenience store will operate around the clock.
Vivian Cheung, Chief Executive Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), said, “We are delighted to see the smooth relocation of airline partners to T2 and the positive passenger response to the new facilities. Positioned to serve leisure travel and mainly regional short-haul flights, T2 is seamlessly connected to and complements T1, which mainly focuses on long-haul and transfer/ transit services. Together, the two terminals strengthen HKIA’s capacity to meet growing passenger demand while enhancing passenger experience.”
Passengers departing from T2 enjoy a streamlined and efficient journey powered by smart technologies. Passengers complete check-in and bag drop using new smart self-service counters before proceeding to the centre of the departures hall and entering the restricted area through security gates embedded with facial recognition technology. They will then undergo security screening at the smart security screening channels and complete immigration clearance procedures before taking the Automated People Mover (APM) to T1 for boarding.
In the next phase, T2 passengers will be using the boarding gates in the new T2 Concourse (T2C) for both departures and arrivals. T2C is expected to start operation before the end of next year, in line with traffic demand.

HKIA Unveils New Terminal 2
Celebrating Milestone with 1,500 Guests
2026/05/22

(Hong Kong, 22 May 2026, 2200hrs) – An opening ceremony for the new Terminal 2 (T2) was held today, with some 1,500 guests from various sectors attending to witness the historic moment of Hong Kong International Airport’s (HKIA) latest development. Fifteen airlines will begin to relocate their check-in services to T2 starting on 27 May 2026 when the departure facilities of T2 are commissioned.
Fred Lam, Chairman of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK);  Michael Wong, Acting Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government; Zhang Yong, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Zhu Xiufeng, Deputy Director-General, Department of General Affairs, the Commissioner Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR; Mable Chan, Secretary for Transport and Logistics; Chris Sun, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, and Vivian Cheung, Chief Executive Officer of AAHK, officiated at the event.
Fred Lam, Chairman of AAHK, remarked at the event, “The opening of T2 is another milestone of HKIA’s development. Positioned as a terminal for leisure travel, T2’s design prioritises efficiency and passenger comfort. We attend to every detail, leveraging technology extensively to enable efficient self check-in, self bag drop and smooth immigration clearance. We believe T2 would be popular among passengers, in particular young travellers. The airy interiors, the clean and floating lines of its streamline design make T2 a timeless architecture, while the dynamic and 3D contents on the LED panels around T2 create a vibe that generates a sense of excitement as passengers embark on their journeys.”
Michael Wong, Acting Financial Secretary, said, “The remarkable achievements of HKIA have been hard-earned, and we will continue to strive in the future. The government will continue to adopt a multi-pronged approach to strengthen HKIA’s position as an international aviation hub, including accelerating the expansion of the aviation network, enhancing intermodal connectivity with the Greater Bay Area, and advancing the development of the Airport City. In particular, we will proactively align with and work on the National 15th Five-Year Plan, and fully support Hong Kong’s role as an international aviation hub.”
Spanning 300,000 square metres, T2 is designed and equipped to serve both departing and arriving passengers. On 27 May the departure facilities will be commissioned, with the arrival facilities expected to commence operations next year, in line with traffic demand.
The departures hall of T2 features eight check-in aisles, P to W, with 68 express self-bag drop counters, 58 smart check-in kiosks and 108 hybrid check-in counters. All self bag-drop counters and hybrid counters feature an ultra-low platform design that enables passengers to put their bags onto the conveyor belt with ease. The 20 e-Security Gates at the entrances to the restricted area are all embedded with facial recognition technology. In tandem with T2 opening on 27 May, the minimum age for using facial recognition at e-Security Gates will be lowered from 11 to 7 in both Terminal 1 and T2.
Inside the restricted area, all 15 smart security screening channels at T2 allow passengers to keep their laptops and bottled liquid under 100ml in their carry-on luggage while undergoing screening. The Immigration Department has set up 35 e-Channels and 60 counters for departing passengers.
Large LED displays of different shapes and sizes are installed at different levels of T2, with 3D contents and ocean-themed videos creating a vibrant atmosphere. The food court at the departures hall serves passengers with eight catering outlets, four of which operate around the clock, while 12 shops offer a variety of products, including travel necessities and souvenirs.
The opening ceremony at T2 was held alongside the HKIA Reception 2026, at which AAHK and 40 business partners including airlines, cargo terminals, and ground handling agents, among others, showcased their latest developments and innovations in different experience zones and booths.   After the opening ceremony and reception, on 23 and 24 May the experience zones and booths will be transformed into HKIA Expo & Career Fair 2026, recruiting for more than 4,400 job vacancies at the airport.

HKIA Conducts Full-scale Passenger Departures Trial at Terminal 2

HKIA Conducts Full-scale Passenger Departures Trial at Terminal 2
2026/05/14

(Hong Kong, 14 May 2026, 1830hrs) – Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) today conducted a full-scale trial at Terminal 2 (T2) in preparation for the commissioning of its new departure facilities scheduled for 27 May 2026. More than 1,100 participants from around 30 organisations took part in the exercise, including Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), three local airlines that will operate at T2, ground handlers, government departments, Aviation Security Company Limited (AVSECO) and other relevant stakeholders.
The full-scale trial simulated the entire end-to-end passenger departure process at T2, including arrival at T2 by Airport Express trains, airport bus, cross-boundary transport and private cars; using self bag drop facilities or airline check-in counters; passing through e-Security Gates into the restricted area; undergoing security screening; completing immigration procedures; as well as proceeding to e-Boarding Gates via the Automated People Mover. Airport staff taking part in the trial role-played as passengers and provided feedback with their user experience and observations.
Steven Yiu, Executive Director, Airport Operations of AAHK, said, “This trial is the largest conducted prior to the commissioning of the T2 departure facilities. The purpose is to familiarise business partners with the layout, facilities, and passenger departure processes of the new terminal. I am pleased to see that, during the trial and the whole preparation for the commissioning of the new T2, the airport community has demonstrated strong professionalism and commitment as ever to ensuring excellence in passenger service. The trial was completed smoothly, assuring that HKIA is ready to welcome the first batch of passengers departing from T2 on 27 May.”
Upon commissioning, the departure facilities at T2 are expected to handle around eight million passenger trips in its first 12 months of operation. Starting on 27 May, 15 airlines primarily operating regional routes, including the three home-based carriers: HK Express Airways, Hong Kong Airlines and Greater Bay Airlines, will relocate their departures check-in service to T2 in different batches. The target is to complete the relocation of all 15 airlines to T2 by mid-June 2026, catering for the demand during the summer peak travel season.
