Forums downtime 18th January 2008

On January 18th 2008 we had a multiple disk RAID failure, below is a record of the status of the restoration process (latest post at the top).

We now are in the process of merging the temporary forums database with the main forums archive, this process could take some time and your patience is appreciated.

The forums are now back up and running again. There are three caveats: firstly that messages posted before 1st January 2008 are still restoring, secondly that it appears that messages posted in the last five days have been lost and that search is disabled. We expect to be able to roll the 'message archive' back into the forums sometime this weekend. You may resume posting messages again.

Having worked solidly on this since we had the rebuilt server handed to us we now have the majority of systems software reinstalled. We are aiming to have a 'lite' forums available later tonight which will contain all messages since 1st January 2008 and will enable users to log back in and continue posting. The remaining data (previous to 1st January) will be folded back into the forums later on this weekend. The last few days posts have proven unrecoverable.

Friday 18th January, 12:45 PM GMT

This morning at about 6 AM GMT we had a catastrophic failure in the RAID array of our forums database server. Our RAID-5 array would have been able to withstand losing one disk but apparently two died at the same time. Either way the entire array was unusable. Our hosting provider has now replaced all disks and rebuilt the server and we have begun the process of reinstalling and restoring. Further updates as we have them.

Thank you for your understanding.
