The Microprocessor Powers Through Its 40th Birthday

The microprocessor has come a long way, baby.

Today, the chip often called the brains of the computer turns 40 years old, and Intel, one of the pioneering firms in microprocessors is celebrating this birthday, as well it should, given that the company’s fortunes are largely based on it.

On Nov. 15, 1971, Intel brought out the Intel 4004 microprocessor, which had 2,300 transistors.
