Message from Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, Vice-Chancellor and President

Dear Colleagues, Students and Alumni,

Dean of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine and Dean of the Faculty of Law

I am very happy to announce that Professor Gabriel M. Leung has been appointed by the Council, at its meeting held on May 28, 2013, as the next Dean of Medicine for a term of five years from August 1, 2013, to succeed Professor Sum P. Lee. Professor Leung is currently the Head of, and a Clinical Professor in, the School of Public Health and the Department of Community Medicine at this University.

The Deanship appointment was made after a worldwide search with the assistance of a professional search firm, and on the recommendation of a search committee which I chaired and which comprised the Faculty Board Chairman (Professor Grace W.K. Tang), three elected Faculty members (Professor T.H. Lam, Professor C.S. Lau and Dr. Leo L.M. Poon), an elected student member (Mr. T.H. So), a lay Council member (Dr. Christopher W.C. Cheng) and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Leung is a highly accomplished scholar and has made distinguished contributions in the field of public health medicine, notably in the control of infectious diseases, life course epidemiology, health systems and policy research. His international standing is evidenced by his appointments as an advisor to various national and international bodies, including the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and on the editorial boards of a number of prestigious journals in the field. He also has an exemplary and proven track record of public service. He served as Under Secretary for Food and Health and as Director of the Chief Executive's Office of the HKSAR Government from 2008 to 2012, and was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star (G.B.S.) in 2012. Given his impressive credentials and outstanding people skills, we have high hopes that Professor Leung can provide strong leadership to the Faculty so that it will continue to flourish and work towards attaining its aspiration to become a world leader in research, education, as well as healthcare.

I am also very pleased to announce that Professor Johannes M.M. Chan will continue to serve as Dean of the Faculty of Law for the period July 1 - December 31, 2013 upon the expiry of his current Deanship on June 30, 2013, while the search process for the next Dean is on-going. This appointment was made by the Council at the same meeting and in line with the University's procedures for making interim Dean appointments. Professor Chan's firm leadership and illustrious accomplishments on various fronts are widely acclaimed, and his deep dedication to the University and kind willingness to help during the transition are very much appreciated.

I invite you all to join me in offering our warmest congratulations to Professor Leung and Professor Chan on their appointments. I would also like to express the University's immense gratitude to Professor Sum Lee for all the distinguished contributions that he has made to the Faculty and the University over the past years, and to wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Professor Lap-Chee Tsui
Vice-Chancellor and President
