Obituary

From The McKinsey Quarterly:
In the News: Remembering Alfred Chandler

Alfred D. Chandler, Jr., widely considered to be the founder of the
field of business history, died on May 10 at the age of 88. Much of
Chandler's research and writing focused on the emergence in the 19th and
early 20th centuries of professionally managed, multi-divisional,
vertically integrated companies. In this article from the archive, John
Stuckey and David White present a framework to help managers decide when
vertical integration makes sense.
