I started and finished swimming with an empty stomach.  It was around 10pm when I left the pool, which by chance was the 2nd half of Arsenal vs. ManU.  I wasn't too keen to watch it at say a bar in Wanchai.  By chance, I recalled that Jockey Club did have live show and so I just went there to see if they still do this these days.  And I saw a lot of people... :)

It's quite interesting to watch the game in a crowd and you could hear all the comments, wishing thinking, dirty words, noise at various moments of truths, and how people react when the players did apparently bad/stupid passes, shots, etc.

Anyway, I didn't bet.  It's a good game based on the 30+ minutes I watched.

I walked towards the west and saw the "pawn" shop at tai wong street east.  The outlook was interesting.  Would explore more in the future.

Cisco to spend US$16B in China over next five years

Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers announced on Thursday US$16 billion in new investments in China, including manufacturing, investment and educational programs.

That includes a US$17.5 million investment in Alibaba.com Group as part of its initial public offering in Hong Kong next week, along with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with that company to develop technology for small and medium-sized businesses in China and elsewhere.

Cisco will double its manufacturing in China, Chambers said, a move worth approximately $14 billion, based on the $7 billion Cisco said it purchased from China over the past five years. The company has great influence over where its suppliers manufacture, and many would be directed to do so in China, Chambers said.

The company will inject $350 million into start-up investments and provide up to $400 million in customer financing via Cisco Systems Capital China, Cisco said.

It will also open another 300 of its Networking Academies to train 100,000 students on networking technology, as part of an MOU with the Ministry of Education, under which it will also donate $6 million in networking equipment.

Missing from Chambers' speech was any expansion of Cisco's aggressive acquisition strategy to China. "We don't acquire competitors," he said, seeming to rule out a move for China-based rival Huawei Technologies. "We acquire to move into new areas." That strategy included the US$3.2 billion purchase of WebEx in March.

Chambers is on a whistle-stop tour of Asia, visiting India earlier this week, where he announced that 20 percent of top Cisco executives would be based in that country, along with signing a services agreement with Wipro.

"Both India and China have [growth, innovation and talent] in front of them. I don't think it's win-lose. I think both India and China win and in a big way," Chambers said in response to a question about the importance of each country to Cisco.

"We don't provide any unique capabilities to any government," Chambers said, answering an allegation that Cisco equipment is used by Chinese telecom regulators to block access from China to various international Web sites, including Wikipedia. "We will not enable any organization uniquely, including our own U.S. government," he said, also revealing that while he is a registered Republican and supporter of Senator John McCain's presidential candidacy.

"One thing a technology company should never do is fall in love with one political party or one form of government."

"Cisco is one of Alibaba Group's most important partners, and our relationship with Cisco as it relates to our numerous small and medium-sized customers is extremely important," said Jack Ma, CEO of Alibaba, who also attended the event.

Microsoft Fires Its CIO After Investigation

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has fired its chief information officer, Stuart Scott, the company said in a short statement Tuesday.
"We can confirm that Stuart Scott was terminated after an investigation for violation of company policies," the company said. "We have no further information to share."

Microsoft is already looking for a replacement. Microsoft General Manager Shahla Aly and Alain Crozier, a Microsoft VP in charge of the company's CFO, sales, marketing and services group will take over Scott's duties while Microsoft looks around.

Scott was hired as Microsoft's CIO in the summer of 2005. Prior to his work at Microsoft, Scott had been a divisional CIO for several divisions during his 17 years with General Electric, most recently as executive VP and CIO of GE Healthcare. Though he began as a co-CIO at Microsoft with Ron Markezich, Scott eventually replaced Markezich. Markezich is now a Microsoft VP in charge of the company's new enterprise managed services line, known as Microsoft Online.

Just last month, Scott sat onstage at the InformationWeek 500 Conference alongside Microsoft COO Kevin Turner. While there, Scott touted data center consolidation, trimming the number of apps running inside Microsoft, a virtualization effort, the use of new collaborative software, and a shift toward spending more of Microsoft's IT budget on new product development.

In an interview posted on Microsoft's Web site that took place soon after Scott's hiring, Scott said he was drawn to Microsoft partially by employees' devotion to the company.

"I was really attracted by the people and the passion and loyalty they have for Microsoft," he said. "I get to work with some of the best, brightest and most driven people in the IT industry. They are here to achieve a higher purpose, not just to earn a paycheck."

His mission was to bring "operational excellence" to Microsoft's CIO job, he said at the InformationWeek 500 Conference.

I have little knowledge about lady except that she had interesting messages during those days of birds flu and SARS.

There are two extreme schools of thoughts.

Those supporters said she must have demonstrated her capability such that she could climb up the ladder. And previous "failures" should be good lessons learned, etc. etc. And previous (bad) performance doesn't imply future, etc. etc.

Those objectors said she did so poorly in HK that WHO shouldn't risk choosing an incapable one, etc. etc.

Someone phoned in a radio program and suggested that she shouldn't put on a "big" hat if her head is not big enough. Otherwise she will end up walking away like Mr. Tung... :)

Anyway, for one good thing, HK people are closer to UN and WHO and it should be a good move to learn more about the world and global village.

Side Effect

My blog was created to store text in simplified chinese. Entry and presentation of traditional chinese didn't work properly. This could be avoided if I didn't choose that particular storage option.
