Small World

I went to Man Shing before going back old nest for dinner and by chance
I met JRPY2 and his 1st lady and girl. We exchanged phone calls around
lunch time and didn't arrange to meet. It's quite surprised to see them
by such slim chance.

And I bought a lens pen at HK$75. I was told (and by common sense) that
the profit margin is very very very very deep for these accessories.

Finally...

It's bleeding time for Tiger...

He got Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, hood & Hoya filter from Wing Shing.

And then a Canon 40D body, battery, lcd protector from one store in 298 and 8GB CF from another.

Good for him... :)

Steve McCurry

I am reading forums re portrait lenses and one asked a question on 85mm f/1.8D (http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=24183&forum=DCForumID6) and someone posted the following response.

_______________

I have the 1.4 version but plan on purchasing the 1.8D version because it significantly smaller and lighter for travel photography.

By the way, Nikon USA www.nikonnet.com/dyn/articles/article_detail/76.html reports that Steve McCurry, the one who shot that famous Afgan Girl portrait, carries the 85mm f1.8D in his bag.

_______________

About what's in the bag:

In the Bag

As you can see from his photographs, Steve McCurry likes to work up-close and in low light, and that calls for short, fast lenses on his two F100 and two N90s bodies-generally a 28mm f/1.4D or 35mm f/2D AF Nikkor. He also carries an 85mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor and a 105mm f/2.8 AF Micro-Nikkor. He packs an SB-24 Speedlight for those times when fill-flash is necessary, and almost always uses a sturdy tripod.

His non-photographic, but absolutely essential gear includes a Swiss Army knife ("because you never know when a corkscrew might come in handy") and the all-purpose, all-in-one Leatherman Tool ("more than once my driver has used it to fix the engine").

Bleeding

Wing Shing called me this morning and said they got the lens. Without any hesitation I told them that I would pick it up in the afternoon.

So... it's bleeding time again.

Tokina AT-X 124 AF PRO DX
AF 12-24 f/4

It came with a lens hood. I added a filter.

Tokina suggested Hoya Pro1D (low profile, whatever). The guy suggested B+W and he said it is better. I did try. But given that Tokina recommended Hoya (same company?) and I made up my mind to choose Hoya, which is a bit cheaper.

New Toy

It's my new toy, AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8D.

http://nikonimaging.com/global/products/lens/af/wideangle/af_20mmf_28d/index.htm

I was looking for a wider lens and I was thinking about this one or AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED. In Wing Sing, the 20mm f/2.8 costed HK$3,380 and the DX one HK$6,000+ (forgot the exact amount). I was not sure if I wanted to spend 6K on a DX lens and so I bought the 20mm one. But in fact, functionally, the 12-24mm is quite good as it produces 18-36mm on my D80. Strictly speaking, 20mm isn't too wide as it becomes 30mm. But I like that technically speaking it can be used in a film camera and it's a faster lens.

Still need to play around with the new lens. Yesterday the weather wasn't too good. Otherwise I should have done more shooting after the grand Spanish dinner...

Lens HK$3,380
Filter HK$260
Hood HK$100
